The "EH" Expression

"EH, welcome to BC."
" I cannot believe how fun BC is, EH?"
"Thanx EH"

Listen carefully, to the conversations held by some of the local people, when visiting the regions of British Columbia, Canada. Listen hard, especially to active individuals and to the crowds who appreciate the outdoors - the walkers, hikers, artists, cyclists, photographers, kayakers, etc.. just listen to the people laughing... yes, listen to the people of BC with smiles on their faces and, often, what you hear, what slips out of their mouths is the little expression, "EH". A word that pops up anywhere and everywhere in any sentence... and at anytime when speaking with a Canadian living in British Columbia.

Yes, you will notice when listening to some Canadians that they start sentences, sometimes with the expression "EH" and sometimes end sentences with "EH". The expression can be used in a question and when answering a query. It is used in moments of joy and in moments of sadness. It is used consciously but mostly, always spoken unconsciously.

Yup, there are some Canadians, like the group at BCeh.com who speak "EH" every day, every hour with great pride and regularity. And why not, "EH" is a "Canadianism" that is recognized all around the world. It is a trademark of being Canadian.

Whether Canadians want to be identified by "EH" or not is their choice... but Canadians are stuck with "EH" as an identifying trait because half of Canadians do not even know they are speaking "EH" anyway.

A Canada Day Survey done in 2004 by Environics Research Group indicated Canadians consider the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and the Canadian Flag our most priceless national symbols.

The same survey, found...

... the word "EH" was the most Canadian of Expressions!

"60% stated "EH" as the top unique Canadian expression of all time!"
