British Columbia heritage sites provide some of the best sightseeing adventures discovering the history of BC, Canada. Throughout the province, along the paved highways, are historic attractions like old forts, pioneer towns, First Nation villages, homesteads, miners and settler camps.

Heritage villages and homesteads are a product of local communities and governments. Together, the dedicated groups oversee the maintenance and staffing as well as the preserving and protecting of historic artifacts and our oldest buildings.

BC heritage sites depicting the story of BC vary in onsite building structures, amenities, services and the number of artifacts on display. Some sites focus on the pioneer with villages, cabins and barns. And other historic attractions tell the story of the First Nation people who were first to settle in British Columbia, Canada.

The bigger heritage sites in BC offer a full experience. Some of the extras may include period actors, theatres, restaurants, tours, guides, plays and historic stores operating as if nothing has changed.

Visitors can walk down gravel streets or up on raised boardwalk paths exploring pioneer villages visiting with candy stores, mercantile shops, trapper cabins, blacksmith shops, railway office, churches, schools, post offices, jails, barns and more.

Visit some of the First Nation historic sites and the culture and tradition is also on display. The village site may include tee pees, carving sheds, sweat lodges, Totem Poles, burial sites and museums with masks, head dresses, tools, canoes, clothing, pictures, paintings, animals and much more.

Many of the bigger heritage sites in the province are located close to a main highway. The parking lots usually are able to accommodate motorhomes and larger vehicles. Each and every heritage site is different because each region of the province is different.

Some of the historic attractions in British Columbia include:

• Fort Steele near Cranbrook and the Doukhobor Discovery Centre near Castlegar in the Kootenay region.
• Barkerville and Cottonwood Homestead located near Quesnel.. and the Huble Homestead near Prince George.. and the 108 Mile Heritage Site near 100 Mile House - all in the Cariboo-Chilcotin-Coast region.
• U'Mista Cultural Centre in Alert Bay on Cormorant Island in the Gulf Islands region.
• North Pacific Historic Fishing Village in Port Edward near Prince Rupert and the Fort St. James National Historic Site in Fort St. James in the North BC region.
