Columbian Ground Squirrels (Spermophilus columbianus)

Found throughout British Columbia the Columbian Ground Squirrel live their lives mostly in colonies underground. The tunnel systems and burrows are made using wood chips and tree bark.

The underground squirrel hide-outs are designed to warn other squirrels of approaching predators like wolves, hawks, eagles and other flesh eating animals. They possess a keen eyesight and superb hearing, which is important to this otherwise defenceless animal.

Early April, the Columbian Ground Squirrel comes out of hibernation and get busy right away. The squirrels are barely out of their long sleep and they are already having litters of 6 -12. The late summer arrives and the squirrel retreats back into hibernation.

The hibernation dens of the squirrels are lined in grass, twigs, wood chips and are below the frost line. Some squirrel architects even have installed drainage systems in case of flooding. On average more time of this underground animal is spent in hibernation then above ground.
